A sad Dom story

Bruce’s frozen Dom Pérignon. Bruce Rolph

Ever wondered what would happen if you forgot a bottle of wine in your freezer?

Perhaps full bottles are more liable to blow up as there is nowhere for the wine to expand to.

Sydney wine-lover Bruce Rolph found out the hard way. Evidently, Dom Pérignon doesn’t take kindly to being frozen solid.

I have frozen plenty of part-emptied bottles of wine in the refrigerator freezer without a problem. Perhaps full bottles are more liable to blow up as there is nowhere for the wine to expand to, as there is in an ullaged bottle. Add the internal pressure inside a full bottle of fizz, and it seems you have explosive potential.

Anyone for Dom Pérignon sorbet?
