Top Wineries of Australia 2023: 1 to 4

Top Wineries of Australia 2023

1. Oakridge Wines

Location: Yarra Valley

Best known for: Chardonnay, chardonnay and chardonnay, although pinot noir is very nearly as good and, as we saw this year, cabernet sauvignon in the right season hits the heights. Shiraz, sauvignon blanc and sparkling blanc de blancs too. 864 is the top tier while the Local Vineyard Series gives special value.

Unusually, cabernet played a major role for Oakridge this year and lobbed them into the coveted number one spot in our Top Wineries list. The 864 Winery Block Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 top scored, together with the 864 Henk Vineyard Aqueduct Block Pinot Noir 2021. Close behind was the Original Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2021, the Willowlake Local Vineyard Series Pinot Noir 2021 and Henk Local Vineyard Series Pinot Noir 2021.

2. Morris

Location: Rutherglen

Best known for: Magnificent fortified wines (muscats, topaques and tawnies) drawn from ancient blending stocks, but reds are underrated, especially the CHM series of shiraz, durif and cabernet. Classic label fortifieds are extreme value.

The Old Premium Rare Liqueur Muscat and Old Premium Rare Liqueur Topaque topped the schedule for Morris, followed by the Cellar Reserve Grand Liqueur Muscat, the Old Premium Rare Tawny and finally the very affordable Classic Liqueur Muscat, a gift at AUD $25 for 500ml.

3. Penfolds

Location: Barossa Valley

Best known for: A jaw-dropping array of great reds with Grange, Bin 707 Cabernet and RWT Barossa Shiraz at the top cascading down through innumerable Bin numbered and regional designated bottlings, with occasional ‘luxury’ products at silly prices. Whites are of comparable quality today, especially Yattarna and Reserve Bin A chardonnays.

Grange 2018 top scored, while RWT Shiraz 2020 also covered itself in glory, as did the one-off Penfolds g5, a blend of five Grange vintages, and close behind these were Magill Estate Shiraz 2020 and Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2020.

4. Eisenstone

Location: Barossa Valley

Best known for: Shiraz and only shiraz, under various single-vineyard (identified with SV and a number) and subregional (SR and a number) labels. Owner/winemaker Stephen Cook draws on a previous big-company career for contacts among the finest grapegrowers.

The Hoffmann Vineyard Ebenezer Shiraz 2020 led an extraordinary field of great shirazes from this newly emergent producer, who only does Barossa and only shiraz at this stage. The Stockwell 2018 and Greenock 2018 were right up there as well, followed closely by McDonald Vineyard Marananga 2020 and Ebenezer 2020. A gob-smacking array of shiraz. If you haven’t heard of these, you need to!
