Top Wineries of New Zealand 2022 tasting a big success

The inaugural Top Wineries of New Zealand 2022 event was a big hit.

“A very good event. So good to have great wine, good food and decent glasses – I would rate it nine points out of 10 (I never give anything a full 10 points),” enthused David Rankin toward the end of the afternoon tasting.

“An outstanding venue. For a first event I think it was sensational!” added Steve Fishwick.

“Congratulations, this is the best wine tasting I have ever been to,” said Verner Eichholz.

“This is the best wine tasting event in Auckland in the last five years. Best wine quality, exceptional food and a great venue,” shared Gary Williams and Jools Collins.

Hiro Kusuda was a big attraction while his very limited edition beerenauslese riesling was probably the hottest wine of the day.

After successful Top Wineries events in Sydney and Melbourne The Real Review finally launched the event in Auckland with two near capacity sessions on Sunday, October 9th at the Park Hyatt in Auckland overlooking the Viaduct boat harbour.

22 of our Top Wineries of 2022 poured a total of 88 wines to an enthusiastic and appreciative audience. It was particularly gratifying to see so many winemakers and/or winery owners attending the event to the obvious delight of wine enthusiasts. Hiro Kusuda, founder/owner/winemaker of our top winery, Kusuda, was a big attraction while his very limited edition beerenauslese riesling was probably the hottest wine of the day.

Some producers, including Kumeu River, Paritua, Tantalus and Gibbston Valley made a strong showing with a mix of marketing, winemaking and viticultural experts that between them covered all bases.

It was a chance for the wine producers to network with their peers and taste their wines.

“We really enjoyed being in the company of other great wineries from around New Zealand, and felt the quality of customers coming through was excellent, and certainly the demographic that we know appreciate our range of wines. We made some excellent sales on the day. We are looking forward to the next event,” said Chrissy Powlesland, the marketing and relationships manager at Tantalus.

I should make special mention of the Hyatt staff, who were absolutely brilliant. They attracted many positive comments from both winemakers and attendees. The Hyatt catering was also first class with platters of freshly shucked oysters, a tasty range of charcuterie and an excellent assortment of local cheeses—all regularly refreshed throughout both sessions.

Order forms for wine were collected by our retail partner for the event, Caro’s Wines.

Screening throughout the tasting was a reel of pre-recorded interviews I conducted via Zoom with the winemakers who attended our Top Wineries of New Zealand 2022.

We sincerely thank everyone who participated and look forward to a repeat performance next year.
