Intense and minerally

Pyramid Valley Sauvignon + 2020, North Canterbury, AUD $32

This is mainly sauvignon blanc, with some minor varieties included for interest. It’s unusual as sauvignon blanc is not widely grown in this part of New Zealand. It’s also a superb wine.

The rich bouquet is varietal yet also infused with nutty oak-derived characters, while the palate is searingly tangy and intense, with elevated acidity giving terrific vitality. There’s a saline mineral note that lingers on a very long aftertaste. Varietal character is relatively quiet—not necessarily a negative. Mouth-watering acidity and minerality, indeed, anyone wondering what ‘mineral’ means should try this. (Screwcap)
