Kumeu River’s stellar chardonnays
Kumeu River has a reputation for producing consistently good chardonnays from their various Kumeu vineyards but in a stellar vintage such as 2020, quality received an extra boost.
My favourite was 2020 Kumeu River Hunting Hill, which earned 97 points for its concentration and complexity. It is a very serious chardonnay indeed.Kumeu River’s Hunting Hill Chardonnay 2020 is a bold, complex wine with impressive drive and obvious longevity.
Their flagship wine 2020 Kumeu River Maté’s Vineyard Chardonnay was close behind with a similar level of ripeness and concentration. It is surprisingly approachable for a wine that has earned a reputation for ageing gracefully.
The 2020 Kumeu River Coddington retains some of its usual mineral characters but shows more opulence than usual, while the 2020 Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay is as good as I can remember and offers terrific value.
The Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay 2020 is a rich, textural and silken chardonnay with tree fruit, peach, nectarine, toast and brioche flavours. A seamless wine with a backbone of bright acidity helping to drive a lengthy finish. A stylish, polished chardonnay. (NZD $35)
Kumeu River’s Hunting Hill Chardonnay 2020 is a weighty, textural chardonnay with an array of subtle citrus, oyster-shell and stone fruit flavours. A bold, complex wine with impressive drive and obvious longevity. Chardonnay with gravitas. (NZD $80)
The Kumeu River Coddington Chardonnay 2020 is a rich, opulent chardonnay with ripe apple, lime, nectarine, white peach, wet slate and mineral characters. A weighty, textural wine with a strong fruit focus supported by savoury, yeast lees and subtle oak flavours. (NZD $60)
Finally, the Kumeu River Maté’s Vineyard Chardonnay 2020 is a rich, concentrated single-vineyard wine that is a very good example of this flagship label. Ripe peach, apricot, mandarin blossom and spicy oak flavours. Deliciously approachable now but with potential. (NZD $85)
