4. Kusuda Wines
Winemaker and founder Hiroyuki “Hiro” Kusuda must be this country’s most fastidious winemaker. He will go to any length in pursuit of wine quality no matter how small the gain might be. The result is a range of supremely elegant, delicate and pure wines with surprising ageing potential. Hiro is revered by his followers around the globe.

Best known for: Five elegant, examples of Bannockburn pinot noir that seem to get better and better with every new vintage.
Everything that winemaker Blair Walter touches seems to turn to gold, including a trio of stylish rieslings and a trio of taut chardonnays, all of which rank among the country’s best. This modest, organic and biodynamic wine producer lets its splendid wines do the talking.

Location: Hawke’s Bay
Best known for: A supremely elegant syrah with a proven cellaring record.
Although the spotlight tends to fall on a spectacular syrah, all wines in their Prestige Collection are stunning including a chardonnay, pinot noir and two superb, blended reds. Sauvignon blanc and riesling from their Te Muna vineyard in Martinborough are two wines that stand out in a crowd, offering a distinct imprint of place.
