Top Wineries of New Zealand 2021: 16 to 13

16. No 1 Family Estate

Location: Marlborough

Best known for: Superlative sparkling wine.

No 1 Family Estate is a sparkling specialist founded by Daniel and Adele Le Brun who have perfected the art of making and marketing high-quality méthode sparkling wine from high-quality Marlborough grapes. Daniel’s family have been producing Champagne since 1750. All are excellent but my favourites are the No 1 Brut Rosé Méthode Traditionnelle and 2016 Cuvée Virginie.

15. Te Mata Estate

Location: Hawke’s Bay

Best known for: Te Mata Coleraine, New Zealand’s most iconic wine.

Te Mata and 2019 are a magic combination with this superlative vintage boosting quality across the board from sauvignon to syrah. The two big winners, in value terms at least, are Elston Chardonnay and Awatea Cabernets Merlot. Collectors should buy 2019 Te Mata Coleraine—it’s a no-brainer.

14. Smith & Sheth

Location: Hawke’s Bay

Best known for: Wines from exceptional vineyard sites.

Steve Smith MW and Brian Sheth describe themselves as contemporary negociants. They seek out established, exceptional vineyard sites to make top wines. They appear to have hit the ground running with top single-vineyard chardonnay, pinot noir and syrah under their distinctive CRU label.

13. Pegasus Bay

Location: Waipara

Best known for: Rich, complex pinot noir and funky sauvignon semillon.

A rise in ranking by seven places from last year may have been assisted by late-release pinot noir and riesling from the 2010 vintage. They certainly demonstrated that Pegasus Bay makes cellar-worthy wines. Rich, complex and concentrated wines.
