This Gimblett Gravels producer boasts the oldest syrah vines in New Zealand, adding extra density to Stonecroft 2018 The Original Syrah. Other distinguished reds include Gimblett Gravels Reserve Syrah and Stonecroft Cabernet Sauvignon. The flagship white is an intensely varietal Stonecroft Old Vine Gewürztraminer.
19. Ata Rangi
Best known for: Powerful, complex and age-worthy pinot noir.
This internationally respected producer is well known for its dense, savoury pinot noir but makes many other distinguished wines including powerful McCrone Pinot Noir, elegant Craighall Chardonnay, succulent Lismore Pinot Gris and Célèbre, a Bordeaux-like, cellar-friendly blended red.
18. Quartz Reef
Location: Central Otago
Best known for: Dense, ripe Bendigo pinot noir and sophisticated methode traditionnelle.
From their 30-hectare, steeply sloping, organic and biodynamic Bendigo vineyard founder and winemaker Rudi Bauer produces several inspiring wines, most notably 2019 Quartz Reef Single Ferment Pinot Noir and 2015 Quartz Reef Methode Traditionnelle Blanc de Blancs. Also consistently good pinot gris. A delicious grüner veltliner is a recent addition to their list.
Location: North Canterbury
This very special biodynamic vineyard and winery was bought by Steve Smith MW and Brian Sheth in 2017 who plan to refine and expand the production of super-premium chardonnay and pinot noir. This is clearly a winery worth watching.
