More wine show trophies named after women

A few weeks ago I lamented the lack of wine show trophies named after women. There are a couple, but probably not much more than that.

Why is there no Mary Penfold Hyland trophy? No Eileen Hardy trophy? These two women from history made enormous contributions to wine in Australia.

The Western Australian Wine Show at Mount Barker has the Pam McGregor trophy, named after a stalwart behind-the-scenes woman who ran that show for many years. For the best aged riesling, it went this year to Alkoomi 2010 Black Label Riesling. And the Sydney International Wine Competition has the Joy Lake memorial championship trophy for the best wine of the competition. This year’s winner was Bald Hills Single Vineyard Pinot Noir 2015.

There may be others in the smaller, lower-profile regional shows.
