Adelaide Hills comes to Surry Hills
A new wine bar associated with Gourmet Traveller Wine magazine, soon to open in Sydney’s Surry Hills, will host a wine exhibition as a pre-opening event.
Named Winebar One, it is located in the basement at 119 Kippax Street, a short walk from Central Station. It promises to enhance the area’s thriving restaurant precinct, and become a hub for wine industry events in Sydney.
Prior to the official opening, which is set for late May, Winebar One will host about 30 Adelaide Hills wineries for a regional showcase entitled Hills Heist. Wine, food and music will flow for three hours from 6pm to 9pm.
Wineries will include Anderson Hill, Artwine, Barristers Block, Bird in Hand, Chain of Ponds, Deviation Road, Elderslie, Elysian Springs, Fox Gordon, Golding, Hahndorf Hill, Henschke, Howard Vineyard, Lobethal Road, Longview, Mt Lofty Ranges, Murdoch Hill, Nepenthe, Paracombe, Penfolds, Petaluma, Riposte, Sew & Sew, Shaw + Smith, Somerled, The Lane Vineyard, The Pawn Wine Co, Tomich, and Wicks Estate.
The 70-plus wines will include chardonnay, pinot noir, sparkling, shiraz and the latest sensation from the Hills, grüner veltliner.
Pouring their drops will include the magazine’s 2017 young winemaker of the year, Michael Downer of Murdoch Hill, plus Adelaide Hills ‘royalty’ Andrew Hardy of Petaluma, Adam Wadewitz of Shaw + Smith, and Tim Knappstein of Riposte, and others. Sydneysider DJ Levins will be spinning the tunes.
The event will take place in the wine bar as well as the ground-level events space, named Winespace. The premises also house the magazine’s offices. Proprietor Stan Sarris aims to establish the facilities as the go-to venue for wine industry events in Sydney.
