Yalumba Old Bush Vine Grenache 2016, Barossa Valley, AUD $22

A gloriously aromatic old vine grenache with top notes of rose petal and musk. Although the raspberry-flavoured palate is approachable it is also stylish and textured, the latter aided by some post-ferment maceration plus maturation in older oak hogsheads. The average age of the source vineyards is 60 years, which is quite remarkable for a $22 wine. It is also good to see it a little less weighty and alcoholic than in the past, though just as intense and flavoursome.

Best served straight from the cellar – or put in the fridge for half-an-hour for a very slight chill. (Screwcap)
