Join me for a sparkling masterclass

As an unashamed Champagne tragic, I like to host a sparkling and Champagne tasting each year in the run-up to Christmas. This year, it’s happening at a new venue: the new Handpicked Wines urban cellar door in Kensington St, Chippendale. They have an upstairs room that’s just right for this sort of event. Plus they serve cheeses, charcuterie and bread as a matter of course, and we do like to have a nibble between glasses of bubbles.

My love of sparkling wine goes way back. As a student at Roseworthy in 1980, my project was to research an Australian homoclime for Champagne. At the same time, I entered the Vin de Champagne Award for the first of several attempts, finally winning it in 1984. Later I became a judge of those awards and have chaired the panel for the last several years.

As much as I love good Champagne I also love fine fizz from anywhere else, and the tasting on November 14 will include top examples from Australia, New Zealand and the world’s newest excitement area for bubbles, the south of England.

With summer almost upon us, and the festive season just around the corner, it’s timely to check the field with a view to stocking up for Christmas, New Year and the rest of it.

Among the 13 wines, we will taste a trophy winner from the recent UK International Champagne and Sparkling Wine Challenge. The Champagnes include top vintage, non-vintage, blanc de blancs, blanc de noirs, rosé and prestige cuvées.
