Margaret River will be the place to be come mid-November. That’s because it is the region’s 50th-anniversary celebration of winegrowing. The annual Margaret River Gourmet Escape has been expanded this year to make it a special celebration.

The phenomenal success story of Margaret River began with Dr Tom Cullity’s initial plantings at Vasse Felix in 1967. A new book documenting the history of the region will be launched at the event by its authors, Perth-based wine writers Peter Forrestal and Ray Jordan.

Billed as a ‘four-day food, wine and produce extravaganza’, the Margaret River Gourmet Escape features an amazing cast of celebs.

The organisers say there are 50 ‘stars’ coming, including Rick Stein, Luke Nguyen, May Chow (Asia’s Best Female Chef), Alex Atala (number 16 in the World’s Best 50 Restaurants), David Thompson, Pierre Koffmann, Andre Chiang and Curtis Stone. The wine presenters will include Jancis Robinson, James Halliday, Nick Stock, Andrew Caillard and yours truly. Entertainer, TV presenter and musician Matt Okine will also be there.

Two annual wine-tasting events have been rolled into the celebration: the Cape Mentelle International Cabernet Tasting and Long Lunch, and Cullen Wines’ 32nd International Chardonnay Tasting.
