Rugby, racing and wine

When I learned that Sir John Kirwan was importing Italian wine I scrambled to find out how many other ex-All Blacks had a connection to the wine industry.

I found two, but there may be more. Simon Kirkpatrick of Kirkpatrick Estate in Gisborne is the nephew of the famous ex-All Black Ian Kirkpatrick and John Ashworth, founder of Junction Estate in Central Hawke’s Bay is a former All Black front row forward with 24 tests under his belt.

Are there more? If so I’d like to know.

Grahame Thorne has long been associated with vineyards and wine in both Marlborough and now Central Otago.

And although he was never an All Black, Ata Rangi’s Clive Paton has the distinction of scoring the first try against the 1977 Lions, playing for Wairarapa Bush.

Mark Carter and his brother own vineyards in Marlborough
