Clearview reds impress

Visit Clearview’s coastal Hawke’s Bay site and it’s easy to see why they’ve got a reputation for producing pretty classy chardonnay. The moderating effect of cooling seas breezes and free-draining gravelly soils are a pretty good foundation for making serious chardonnay.

Four recent releases confirmed my view that Clearview also makes very stylish reds. Don’t believe the rumour that Gimblett Gravels is the only source of top Hawke’s Bay reds made from the classic Bordeaux varieties – Te Awanga can offer a serious challenge, particularly in the 2015 vintage which seem to have come up trumps for this seaside chardonnay specialist.

The 2015 Clearview Two Pinnacles Reserve Malbec punches well above its weight, delivering power, intensity and character. A wine with strong varietal identity and serious cellaring potential. (NZD $25)

2015 Clearview Old Olive Block is a juicy blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, malbec and merlot that’s deliciously drinkable now for those who can’t wait until it looks even better in a few years’ time. (NZD $36)

The 2015 Clearview Reserve Cabernet Franc is one of the few examples of variety bottled in New Zealand and is also one of the very best. A robust wine with energy and complexity. (NZD $45)

My favourite is the 2015 Clearview Enigma, a classy blend of merlot, cabernet franc and malbec that begs to be enjoyed now but promises to get even better. Destined to become a classic. (NZD $55)
