Preliminary results indicate that New Zealand wines performed significantly better than the overall average in the world’s largest wine competition held in London at the end of April.

New Zealand wines earned a total of 41 gold and platinum awards giving an average of 8.3%, more than twice the overall average of 3.8%. Silver medal awards were also up on average with a New Zealand result of 28.7% compared to the overall 19.4%.

Wines receiving no awards or commended ratings averaged 34.7% overall against a New Zealand average of 19.8%.

That encouraging result suggests reinforces my view that New Zealand wine has a quality focus that’s well above average. It also supports the premium price that New Zealand wines command in export markets.

Full results will be available on the Decanter website from the first week in June.
