Villa Maria does it again
Villa Maria has an astounding record of success at wine competitions where they are a high-performer in just about every category except sparkling. It’s hardly news when Villa Maria (tastings) is chosen as ‘winery of the show’. It’s far more newsworthy when they are not chosen, which is seldom.
I recall asking founder/owner, George Fistonich, how he responded to criticism of “pot hunting” – deliberately making wine styles that are more likely to win medals. He replied that they put a lot of effort and energy into making high-quality wines.
“High-quality wines just happen to perform well at wine shows.”
Now, for the third year in a row, Villa Maria has been named one of the most admired wine brands in the world by the respected UK publication Drinks International. This year they were fourth.
Drinks International compile their annual list by polling over 200 wine industry experts. I’m one of those “wine industry experts”. Villa Maria certainly got my vote.
