Buy of the Week AU
Banks Thargo Merlot 2013, Coonawarra, AUD $18
It is always exciting to find affordable wines with integrity such as this. The nose is beautifully aromatic, reminiscent of warmed cherries in a vanilla syrup. The palate is tight and bright and remarkably youthful, brimming with concentrated sweet-mulberry berries and gentle drying tannin – it certainly does not look four years old. There is a little attractive earthiness once the wine sits in the glass.
It is a touch too young to drink right now, though decanting helps open it up, but it will develop nicely with age. A sub-$20, single vineyard merlot for the cellar. Hard to beat.
