Kalleske Florentine Single Vineyard Chenin Blanc 2016, Barossa Valley, AUD $20
This is a very beautiful wine, though I found it quite difficult to establish the variety when tasting blind, as it is not very distinctive on the nose. There’s a trace of flowers and some very faint oak. However, the palate is delightful; open-textured and soft, with surprisingly bright, energetic fruit within. There are gentle pear flavours and faint background savouriness.
Now that I know it is chenin blanc, it all makes sense, as it has energy, character and weight. There is more complexity than initially meets the eye and its vivacious nature makes it incredibly appealing.
