Old vine semillon

The Willows Vineyard Semillon 2015, Barossa Valley, AUD $17

Australian wine is filled wine gems, and this is most certainly one of them. It is made from a single vineyard of semillon planted in 1936 by Herbert Scholz. But don’t be deceived by this wine. At first, it looks decidedly neutral. But then after a few minutes, its shyness disappears and the wine becomes beautifully expressive. There are some faint blossom notes, gooseberry and a little lime. The palate has some lovely restrained fruit with undertones of lemon butter. Pleasant texture and medium-weight.

This is a wine lovers wine – a wine to think about and ponder. It expresses both place and variety. Just give it some time and take care not to over-chill.

Thanks for the ‘word up’ on The Willows Semillon. Sounds like a fantastic buy. I like Semillon (not just fr HV either) as it can deliver nuance and X Factor for steal prices.
