NBR’s (The National Business Review) annual rich list indicated that all is well in the wine industry, with six of the wealthiest owners and families increasing their estimated net worth on the previous year.

Majority shareholders in Delegat Group Ltd (tastings), Jim and Rosemari Delegat, led the way with NZD $450 million, an increase of NZD $100 million on last year.

Sir George Fistonich, founder of Villa Maria (tastings), tied for second place with the Giesen Family (tastings), each with an estimated worth of NZD $150 million.

Peter Yealands was next with NZD $125 million, up NZD $20 million from last year following the sale of a majority share in Yealands Estate (tastings) to Marlborough Lines.

The Marris family had boosted their net worth to NZD $110 million while the Babich family (tastings), who are currently celebrating their 100th vintage, were next with NZD $90 million.

The list also included Todd Family who recently quit their stake in the industry when they sold Winegrowers of ARA (tastings).

RealReview is a welcome publication; however it gives an overexposure to NewZealand’s wines in my opinion.Tassy has been making wines much, much longer and they do not have N.Z.’s WET tax break. They deserve more attention in the Review as they produce excellent wines.
