Serious semillon

Brokenwood-ILR-Semillon-2009Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon, Hunter Valley 2009 AUD $75

A classic semi-mature semillon: light yellow hue and fresh herbal, lemony aromas amazingly youthful and barely beginning to show toastiness. Intense, delicate, zesty vibrancy, great flavour and finesse. Long, refreshingly dry, appetizing finish. (10.5 per cent alcohol; screw cap)

I took delivery of 6 bottles of the ILR about 3 weeks ago, based on the very strong reviews. While it is clearly a strong performer, it’s still hard to bridge the gap on pricing relative to the consistently strong showing from the Tyrrell’s Steven’s, Belford and HVD stable, as well as the Thomas Braemore Semillon’s at typically 1/2 the price of the ILR.
