Chateau La Nerthe Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhone Valley 2011 $79
The bouquet is shy and loaded with earth, humus, fungal and foresty aromas, no longer brightly fresh or fruity but more mysterious and profound. It’s very full-bodied and quite muscular; deep, tannic, structured and emphatic, with traces of dried herbs, star anise and even violets. A superb wine that keeps unfolding more. (14.5 per cent alcohol; cork.)
