Tiny vineyard a big hit on Virgin Atlantic
Gibson Bridge (tastings) is a tiny 2.3 hectare vineyard in Renwick, Marlborough. They are, unusually, Pinot Gris specialists. Their range of wines includes a Wild 2013 Pinot Gris, a Barrique Ferment 2013 Pinot Gris, a Single Vineyard 2009 Pinot Gris and a Sweet 16 Botrytis Pinot Gris (tasting) as well as a Reserve 2014 Pinot Gris (tasting), which I earned a rating of 95 points from me, making it one of Marlborough’s best in 2014.
Owner, Howard Simmonds, phoned me to say that he heard that the English wine merchant, Berry Bros and Rudd was looking for a New Zealand white wine to offer their customer Virgin Atlantic for service on Upper Class. They wanted anything except Sauvignon Blanc.
Howard sent them a sample of Gibson Bridge Reserve 2014 Pinot Gris. They liked it. The executives at Virgin Atlantic also liked it and gave him an order for 600 cases. They plan to make a video featuring the wine which will be shown on the aircraft. The wine will be served on Virgin Atlantic Upper Class from October.
Well done Gibson Bridge. You can buy the wine from their website www.gibsonbridge.co.nz
