A jewel from the Hunter
Brokenwood 2009 Latara Vineyard Semillon, Hunter Valley $55
To many New Zealand drinkers Semillon is a nasty green and grassy wine, thanks to the widespread use of an inferior Swiss clone of the variety that did for Semillon what Jack the Ripper did for late night closing. The antidote for that irrational loathing is a glass of this wine, or any other top Hunter Valley Semillon with a few year’s bottle age.
Perfumed Semillon that is just beginning to show some honey, toasty bottle development while retaining hauntingly pure citrus flavours. The acidity has mellowed but still offers a tangy backbone. Delicious wine that will reward those with the patience to hold it for at least another five years. Score: 95 ★★★★★ – view on bobcampbell.nz
