Marchesi Alfieri La Tota Barbera d’Asti, Piedmont 2012 $40
This smacks of Piedmontese red wine more than varietal barbera: it has a deep, bold purple-red colour and savoury aromas of dried-herb and fresh-earth. The palate is concentrated and delicious, bright and lively, with plenty of acidity, so it comes into its own with food. (Cork; 14.5 per cent alcohol). Score: 94 ★★★★½ – view on Huonhooke.com
Ageing: Drink now to 12 years.
Food: Vitello tonnato.
Stockists: Prince Wine Store, Sydney and Melbourne.
