Under $20

Castello Del Poggio Barbera d’Asti DOCG, Piedmont 2011 $16 Value: very good

With a medium-deep red-purple hue and a bright, youthful, savoury fruit and dried bayleaf bouquet, this is not overly complex but is amazing value for money. The rich, smooth palate has black-cherry, dried-herb and spice flavours with a prune and licorice aftertaste. Now to five years. 14 per cent alcohol. 89/100 – Huon’s Wine 360

Food: venison braised with cherries

Stockists: Dan Murphy’s stores
