Clonakilla Hilltops Shiraz, Hilltops 2013 $35 Value: terrific

image

The 2013 harvest was outstanding throughout inland NSW, and the Clonakilla red wines are in top form. This has a deep red-purple hue and clean, ripe aromas of black-cherry and subtle spices, displaying spot-on grape ripeness. It’s elegant and sweetly fruited in the mouth, with good intensity and length, enhanced by abundant smooth, supple tannins. A very fine wine – possibly the best yet under this label. Drink now to 15 years. 14 per cent alcohol. 93/100 – Huon’s Wine 360

Food: grilled lamb chops with pesto; beef tagliata with wilted rocket; pepper steak.

Stockists: Fiveway Cellars, Sydney; Prince Wine Store, Melbourne
