World’s Best Wine Lists 2014
Australian restaurants have done exceedingly well in the inaugural The World of Fine Wine magazine ‘World’s Best Wine Lists 2014’.
The results feature 14 Australian restaurants with the maximum three-star ratings – including six in Melbourne and five in Sydney. Indeed, our two major cities did especially well when you note that Rome received three-star ratings for only four restaurants, Paris three, Berlin and Vienna two each.
And from a total of 219 three-star ratings, Australia had the third most three-star lists in the world, after the UK and US.
Sydney’s three-star winning restaurants are Quay, Black By Ezard, Glass Brasserie, Love Tilly Devine and Rockpool Bar & Grill. Melbourne’s three-star winners are Vue de Monde, Flower Drum, Rockpool Bar & Grill, Masani, Rosetta Ristorante and Woodland House. Australia’s final three were the Royal Mail Hotel at Dunkeld in western Victoria, Rockpool Bar & Grill Perth and The Louise & Appellation in the Barossa Valley.
This wine-list competition is the world’s newest global quest of credibility, and none of the Australian restaurants can be said to be a new discovery. They’ve all done well before.
Of course, a massive panel of judges was drawn upon, and dare I suggest they would have had a good look at each country’s local wine list awards, such as our Fine Wine Partners sponsored Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards (which has been going for 20 years) to help them ‘cut to the chase’.
The high-profile names on the judging panel include Gerard Basset, Andrew Jefford, Tom Stevenson and Elin McCoy. They assessed more than 4,000 wine lists to come up with approximately 200 three-star lists, 400 two-star and 600 one-star lists.
It’s great to see Sydney’s Love, Tilly Devine doing so well. It’s a tiny wine bar well-known to locals and specializing in fringe and ‘natural’ wines, but its list has grown and matured to the degree that it also received three glasses from Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards as well as its award for Australia’s best wine bar list in 2013. And sommelier Matt Swieboda is simply one of the best at his trade.
