Clare Legends Announced

The Clare Valley’s first-ever Hall of Fame awards were announced on May 16 at a gala dinner in Clare, during the Clare Gourmet Weekend.

Nine awards were presented including six Legends Awards, to the late Carl Sobels of Quelltaler, the late Mick Knappstein of Stanley Wine Company (later known as Leasingham Wines – tastings), the late Jim Barry of Jim Barry Wines (tastings), and three living legends – Jane Mitchell of Mitchell Wines (tastings), Jeffrey Grosset of Grosset Wines (tastings) and Brother John May of Sevenhill Cellars (tastings).

As a member of the judging panel, I was especially pleased to see Steve Baraglia of Pikes Wines (tastings) winning the Rising Star award. As winemaker at Pikes, under Neil Pike, he has helped bring the Pikes wines – which were always good – up to a new level. The Viticulturist of the Year is Colin Hinze of Taylors (tastings) and Winemaker of the Year is Kevin Mitchell (pictured) of Kilikanoon (tastings). Hearty congratulations to all, and thoroughly deserved.

Chair of Clare Valley Winemakers Inc, Neil Paulett, said: “We hope to run these awards biennially. We have a long and proud history of grapegrowing and winemaking in the Clare Valley and we are so pleased to recognise our past, present and future with these inductions.”
