Wine Of The Week
Fifth Leg Cabernet Shiraz Merlot, Western Australia 2012 $18
This high-profile brand comes from the Treasury-owned Devil’s Lair winery in Margaret River, where winemaker Oliver Crawford plies his trade. Blended from Margaret River and Great Southern grapes, it has a bright colour and stylish cassis and cedar aromas, with a hint of super-ripe fruit. It’s fruit-sweet on entry, very ripe-tasting, with a strong cabernet personality, admirably subtle oak and smooth, balanced tannins. It’s fruit-driven as you might expect at the price. A lovely drink and terrific value for money. Best now to 2024. 14.5 per cent alcohol. 90/100 – Huon’s Wine 360
Food: grilled meats, especially lamb chops and pork sausages; meaty casseroles; hard cheeses such as reggiano and gruyere.
