Wine Of The Week
Logan Weemala Gewurztraminer, Orange 2013 $19
Weemala is Peter and Hannah Logan’s second label, and is the name of their Mudgee vineyard, meaning ‘good view’. It is a pity there is so little gewürztraminer in Australia’s cooler regions: it may never be wildly successful but it adds to the rich variety of wines we can count on for diversity in our diet.
Medium-light yellow with a copper tinge, it expresses a very attractive spicy varietal aroma, somewhat jasmine-like, not too simplistic but showing some nuances. It’s light and fresh on the tongue, without the too-obvious sugar, alcohol, tannin grip or other heaviness that can be issues with gewurz. There’s a touch of sweetness which is nicely interwoven with the richness. A very good wine at an appealing price. Now to 2017. 14 per cent alcohol. 92/100 (Huon’s Wine 360)
Food: washed-rind cheeses; roast chicken with a rich, creamy sauce; mild Thai fish curry.
