West Cape Howe Two Steps Shiraz, Mt Barker & Frankland 2011 $28

West Cape Howe is based at Mt Barker in the Great Southern region; managing director is the vastly experienced WA winemaker Gavin Berry. Its speciality is regional varietal table wines that consistently represent outstanding value for money. This is a classic example. Deep red-purple coloured, it smells of subtle spices overlying chocolate, vanilla, blackberry and walnut with a subtle floral note. It’s beautifully ripe, full-bodied and deliciously smooth, with soft, gentle tannins and fleshy texture. An almost opulent style with good fruit-sweetness followed by a clean finish. Now to 2031. 14 per cent alcohol. 93/100 (Huon’s Wine 360)

Food: pan-fried fillet steak with mustard béarnaise
