Westend Wines Changing Name
The Calabria family’s Riverina winery Westend Estate (tastings) is to revert to using the family name. Westend began life as Calabria Wines in the 1970s, and now the next generation is taking control, they’ve decided to go back to the family name and call it Calabria Family Wines.
Managing director Bill Calabria jokes “My four children have made the decision for me. As you can see, I don’t seem to have a say. Export is one of the main reasons they made the change. They didn’t like Westend.” I agree with the ‘children’: I always thought the name Westend sounded more like a beer, and a down-market one at that. It could be confused with the name of a province of southern Italy, but that’s fixed by adding the words Family Wines.
Bill Calabria says he will not be replacing departing chief winemaker Bryan Currie, who has gone to McWilliam’s (tastings). Says Bill: “Bryan has done a great job for me over the past 12 years, and he moves on, and I am sure we will remain good friends. We still have two very good winemakers and a cellar and winemaking team who have been with us for over 20 years. I have had a number of winemakers call, but we won’t need to replace Bryan at this stage.”
