A Climate For Change

Climate change and its potential effect on viticulture is a hot topic, but Tim Stevens of Huntington Estate (tastings) in Mudgee puts it into perspective in his latest newsletter.

He points out the difference in mean growing-season temperature between two great but starkly different regions of France, Burgundy and the northern Rhone Valley, is just 1.5 degrees Celsius. “Here in Australia, that is the same difference between the Yarra and Barossa Valleys.

While other factors also influence wine styles, these temperature differences serve to illustrate the effect climate change can have on vineyards.” He calls for engagement with what has become a politicized debate. “(It) is something that needs to be addressed, not ignored.”
