Australia Gains 3rd Master Sommelier
Sydney’s Sebastian Crowther (on the right of the above photo) has become the third Australian to graduate from the Master Sommelier examination. Crowther, who works at Sixpenny restaurant in Stanmore, joins Franck Moreau of the Merivale group and Michael Engelmann of Rockpool Bar & Grill who also have the qualification. It is a rigorous exam: only three of 24 sommeliers from all over the world who were examined in London recently made it through, the others being from Belgium and England. Earlier this year in Texas, only one out of 70 candidates passed. There are now 218 master sommeliers globally. The exam has four components: tasting, oral, serving and recommendation. Crowther, whose wine list at the Royal Mail Hotel, Dunkeld, Victoria, won the top award in Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards last year, now has the right to put the letters MS after his name.
