Wine Of The Week
Plantagenet Chardonnay, Mount Barker 2012 $33
Conventional wisdom has it that the Great Southern is great territory for riesling, but not chardonnay, while the reverse applies in Margaret River. But here is contrary evidence.
This is an excellent chardonnay in the refined, modern idiom, with savoury malty, nutty, straw-like aromas. The palate is soft and light, clean and delicate with richness at its core. Fine and long, with good concentration and appealing texture, yet also lightness and spring-water purity of flavour. Best now to 2022. 13.7 per cent alcohol. 93/100 (Huon’s Wine 360)
Food: roast chicken, crayfish grilled with white wine and butter, pork dumplings, prawn risotto, Taleggio cheese.
