Wine Of The Week
Punt Road Napoleone Vineyard Shiraz, Yarra Valley 2012 $29
Punt Road owners, the Napoleone family, have extensive vineyards of 190 hectares at Coldstream, and winemaker Kate Goodman dispenses excellent wines at some of the Yarra’s most attractive prices.
This is a modern Yarra shiraz style, moderate in both alcohol and ripeness, enhanced with some whole-bunch fermentation, and the result is a complex, fascinating medium-bodied red. The sweetly spicy aromas invoke red and blue fruits, plus a leathery note, probably from stalks. The fruit expression is excellent, with a fruit-sweet mid-palate and clean tannins firming the finish. It’s stylish, long and refined, and already drinks remarkably well. Now to 2025. 13 per cent alcohol. 94/100 (Huon’s Wine 360)
Food: osso buco, stinko, veal parmigiana, soft cheeses such as taleggio and Red Square.
