Wine Of The Week
Yangarra Estate Vineyard GSM Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre, McLaren Vale 2011 $28
Yangarra Estate is in the Blewitt Springs locality of McLaren Vale where the Rhone Valley grape varieties thrive on the poor, sandy soils. The big gun is a magnificent pure grenache called High Sands, but it’s $110 a bottle, which makes this look even better value.
With a deep red-purple colour, it expresses very ripe, bold, sweet fruit. The sweetly ripe plum aromasseem slightly shiraz-dominant while the body weight is medium-full. The tannins are emphatic yet supple, the balance is impeccable and the flavours irresistible. A great success, especially considering the wet 2011 vintage. Best now to 2026. 14 per cent alcohol. 93/100 (Huon’s Wine 360)
Food: steak and kidney pie, pressed sheep’s tongue, morcilla, pasta with game ragu
