Wynns Yarra Valley Estate

Here’s a snippet of intriguing history which emerged at the recent Yeringberg 150th anniversary.

According to Yeringberg (tastings) owner Guill de Pury, the late Samuel Wynn came to the Yarra Valley in the early 1950s and was interested in buying St Huberts (tastings) – one of the earliest properties in the Yarra, established by the de Castella family, but whose vines had long before been uprooted.

Wynn asked Guill’s father if he’d like to go into business with him. There were no vines or active wineries in the Yarra at the time. The elder de Pury declined: “He was too old and not interested,” said Guill.

So Wynn and his son David went off to Coonawarra, where they bought Chateau Comaum and re-named it Wynns Coonawarra Estate (tastings). The wine map could so easily have been so different…
