Is the Barossa Australia’s greatest wine and food region?


The Fairfax debate “That the Barossa is Australia’s greatest wine and food region” was a highly entertaining evening, with speakers ‘for’ the motion being Barossa food legend Maggie Beer and wine writer Nick Stock, and ‘against’, the Herald’s own Joanna Savill and Hunter winemaker Mike De Iuliis. Yours truly was master of ceremonies.

Savill questioned the appeal of German food, the Barossa’s prevailing genre, which gained traction for the ‘no’ team until Stock lasciviously chanted the word ‘bacon’.

The ‘no’ team also landed a punishing blow when De Iuliis revealed an old Nick Stock tweet which had bagged Barossa wines, until he was forced to confess that he’d made it up.

The ‘yes’ team won the day by a slim margin on a show of hands. The food at Glass Brasserie, by resident chef Joe Pavlovich and the Barossa’s Lachlan Colwill, was excellent and Barossa wines by Teusner (tastings), Spinifex (tastings), Peter Lehmann (tastings) and Dandelion Vineyards (tastings) a delight.
