Ocean Eight Pinot Gris, Mornington Peninsula 2012 $30

This is a subtly complex gris with more character than most of its peers, with toasty-nut nuances and a trace of low-level sulfide. It’s captivating wine, with round, pillowy structure and creamy texture, not unlike a fruit-driven chardonnay. It’s not sweet, and retains freshness and life. A very enjoyable style of gris. Now to 2016. 13.5 per cent alcohol. 92/100 (Huon’s Wine 360)

Food: spice-rubbed grilled chicken

Stockist: Vintage Cellars
