A rare gold for Hunter Valley cabernet
A second look reveals it was not made from Hunter grapes, though, but Rylstone. Rylstone is officially part of the Mudgee region but its high altitude means it’s better known for delicate white wines than reds.
The source is De Beaurepaire’s (tastings) extensive 54-hectare vineyard, at 570 to 600 metres altitude. The wine is an elegant, medium-bodied, cool-climate style with violet and briar aromas. It’s $35 at Jorg and Jan Gartelmann’s Hunter cellar door on Lovedale Road.
