Wine of the week
Saltram 1859 Chardonnay, Eden Valley 2012 $21
The 1859 range is a new one for Saltram, celebrating the winery’s foundation year. Chardonnay is not a noted strength of the Eden Valley, but this one is very good and terrific value for money, especially as it’s probably subject to discounting.
The colour is medium-light yellow, the bouquet full of butter, peach and honey, lightly tealeafy, quite complex and highly alluring. The same flavours come through in the mouth, where it has good intensity and softness, balance and length. Oak is unassertive and it’s full of charm. Now to five years. 13 per cent alcohol. 92/100 (Huon’s Wine 360)
Food: seafood and fish served with buttery sauces, through to richer poultry and even lighter-weighted pork dishes. Buttery scallops would be perfect.
