Penna Lane Watervale Riesling, Clare Valley 2012 $20
Yet another excellent Clare riesling from 2012. This and the same maker’s slightly dearer Skillogalee Valley sub-regional bottling are both very good. The Watervale wine has a light to mid-yellow colour and an alluring bouquet of flowery young riesling fruit and creamy yeast lees-derived aromas. It’s soft and dry in the mouth, smooth and generous with a clean, balanced finish. It’s delicate and delicious, drinking well now but would take some age gracefully. A brilliant accompaniment to anything from the sea. Best now to 2020. 12.5 per cent alcohol. 93/100 (Huon’s Wine 360)
Food: pan-fried white-fleshed fish such as flounder, snapper, barramundi or flathead; scallop ceviche; tuna carpaccio; salmon gravlax; raw oysters.
