Wine of the week
Medhurst Sauvignon Blanc, Yarra Valley 2012 $25
Medhurst is the relatively new vineyard of former Southcorp CEO Ross Wilson and his wife Robyn, established in 2000 in the plum Gruyere district of the Yarra Valley. Winemaker is the talented Matt Steel, formerly of Domaine Chandon.
This delicious wine manages to combine bright, fresh varietal fruit with complexing barrel-ferment characters, the oak seeming to lift the ripe fruit aromas rather than dominate. It’s very stylish and energetic in the mouth, its lively fruit enhanced by seamless, balanced acidity. Mouth-watering stuff. If only all savvy was this good. Now to four years. 12.2 per cent alcohol. 93/100 (Huon’s Wine 360)
Food: pan-fried scallops, spaghetti marinara, Caesar salad with grilled chicken
