Hardys back making Tassie bubbles
After two vintages when it did not buy Tasmanian grapes for sparkling wine, Hardys is back in the market.
Chief sparkling winemaker Ed Carr says he bought grapes freely in 2013; in fact he almost failed to fill his needs. This is an encouraging turn-around from the two previous vintages when Champ Equity, owner of Accolade – which is the umbrella for the Hardys (tastings), Arras and Bay of Fires labels (tastings) – directed Carr not to buy any sparkling grapes from Tasmania.
The upshot is that there will be no single-vintage Tassie bubblies under these labels from 2011 or ’12, but Carr says there is plenty of stock to maintain the non-vintage cuvees.
