2012 Winemaker of the Year, Gourmet Traveller Wine

Virginia Willcock, chief winemaker at Margaret River winery Vasse Felix (tasting notes), has won the 2012 Winemaker of the Year Award, organized by Gourmet Traveller Wine magazine.

A six-person panel including myself selects the Winemaker of the Year from a short-list of eight. The other seven were Sandro Mosele (of Kooyong and Port Phillip Estate, Mornington Peninsula), Timo Mayer (Mayer and Gembrook Hill, Yarra Valley), Steve and Monique Lubiana (of Stefano Lubiana, Tasmania), Kym Schroeter (Penfolds white winemaker), Bryan Currie (Westend, Riverina), Rob Mann (Cape Mentelle, Margaret River) and Rob Diletti (Castle Rock, Great Southern).

Apart from the Winemaker of the Year, we also award the Wine Australia Medal for the young winemaker of the year (this year, Jacob Stein of Mudgee winery Stein’s Wines) and the Len Evans Award for leadership in wine, which went to Alister Purbrick, of veteran Victorian winery Tahbilk.
