Poole’s Rock Sells to AGL

Hunter Valley wine people are shocked at the impending sale of Poole’s Rock’s Broke vineyards to AGL Energy, an organisation that Poole’s Rock’s late founder and owner David Clarke had personally taken to the streets to protest against.

AGL’s desire to mine coal seam gas in the Hunter has brought protest and resistance from the wine industry, including local winemaker associations. The sale, handled by the trustee Ian Ferrier on behalf of Clarke’s family, is seen by them as a betrayal of David Clarke, whose recent death they are mourning. The winery was earlier sold to Audrey Wilkinson owners, the Agnew family. What a pity the Agnews didn’t also buy the vineyards. Brian McGuigan, whose viticultural contracting company manages the AGL vineyards, has distanced himself from AGL, declaring viticulture (and wine-related tourism) to be incompatible with CSG mining
