Lark Takes to the Wing
Lark Hill has bought a high-quality shiraz vineyard in the prized Murrumbateman district of the Canberra wine region. The vineyard, Dark Horse, has supplied grapes to Clonakilla, Collector Wines and Ravensworth – all top-quality producers.
Lark Hill, owned, established and operated by the Carpenter family, is a Canberra pioneer and has always made superb white, sparkling and pinot noir wine from its high-altitude Bungendore vineyard. But it’s never quite cracked it with full-bodied reds. It relies on growers in warmer sites to supply shiraz, and the results have been generally good but mixed.
Now the Carpenters will have full control over a vineyard in the right site, and the prospects are exciting. As they’ve done with the original vineyard, the Carpenters will convert the Dark Horse vineyard to biodynamics. The vineyard was established in 2000 by Bryan Martin of Ravensworth, and Lark Hill has been buying shiraz and viognier from it in recent vintages.
